In Star Trek: Armada war rages across the Alpha Quadrant as players command four powerful races in a strategic struggle for survival. Throughout 20 missions, players engage in dynamic ship-to-ship combat, while overseeing the construction, repair and staffing of up to 30 starships -- from battleships, cruisers, destroyers and scout ships, to cargo, transport and construction ships. Campaigns are comprised of a variety of tactical, combat and protective missions, which advance the overall story -- from the eerie warnings of the Borg invasion to the ultimate Picard showdown.

A group of British scientists are teaming up to create the first ever Star Trek-style force field. The shield would be used to protect astronauts from cancer-causing radiation coming from the sun in the form of solar wind. Astronauts will be able to turn the shield on or off, and they'll even be able to use it on themselves when venturing outside their spaceship. All they need now is to get this guy to design their ship.

Breakthroughs are likewise necessary to enable the energy shields that ships in Star Trek use to protect themselves in combat. These shields reportedly consist of coherent graviton emissions. Physicist Michio Kaku suggests shields are unlikely, as there is no known force that could repel all forms of matter and energy. A more limited protective technology is more likely, though it too would be difficult.
