Released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64 , Star Fox 64 ( Lylat Wars in Europe) was the next step in the series. Included in the game was the Rumble Pak as force feedback. It ... introduced full spoken dialogue, fully three dimensional graphics, new vehicles and characters. Star Fox 64 is considered the beginning of the Star Fox canon , and is one of the more popular games in the series.
The sequel to 1993's FX chip-powered Super NES title, Star Fox 64 is a 3D shooter that takes place in outer space as well as on planet surfaces. As Fox McCloud, players must defeat the maniacal Dr. Andross and his henchman in order to restore peace to Planet Corneria and save the Lylat star system. Aided by members of the Star Fox team, Slippy Toad, Peppy Hare, and Falco Lombardi, players will pilot the Arwing fighter, a Landmaster hover tank, and even a submarine as they fight Andross' legion across 14 planets.

One route through the game. Among Star Fox 64's features is the in-game sampled voice speech that replaced the chatter from the original game. However, the original chatter, referred to as "Lylat" in the language option-screen, can be enabled in the PAL version, though the feature is not in the Japanese and American NTSC versions. The game relies much more heavily on dialogue than the original, and together with the cinematic sequences, they drive the story forward. This dialogue has ... become the target of parody in recent years, especially the repetitive phrases of Peppy Hare, particularly the phrase "Do a barrel roll!".
Star Fox 64’s mission-by-mission approach appeals to both the casual and hardcore gamer. You can go back to replay missions at any time after you have beaten them, competing for the medals you may have missed on the first try. There are various paths to story mode, too, which opens a realm of opportunities for those looking for something more than a standard, linear approach. There is ... an unlockable expert mode to complete, as well.

Two years later in 1997, after many discussions from Nintendo and sneak previews, Star Fox 64 was released. This was the first game in the series to use voice actors for real-time dialog, the first ever addition of the Rumble Pack to let players "feel" the game (such as when they got hit by enemy fire), and greater levels of detail along with a rework of the sprites and new vehicles.
