The Stanley Works is a manufacturer of a broad range of tools, hardware, and security products for the consumer, industrial, professional, commercial, and institutional markets. Stanley is a global manufacturer, with production facilities in 17 U.S. states and 14 foreign countries, and is one of the world leaders in hand tools. Approximately 40 percent of its revenues are derived outside the United States. Stanley is an old and successful company in a hidebound industry, metalworking, that has proven extremely vulnerable to foreign competition since the 1960s. The early 2000s have seen the company diversify further into the security business through a string of acquisitions; security products and services now generate a full quarter of overall sales.

The Stanley Works licensing program is the most comprehensive and successful licensing program in the hardware industry, with more than 25 licensees in the U.S. and abroad. Through licensing, Stanley has extended its brand dominance in the hardware category and has reinforced its "pro-quality" image with core consumers. Utilizing the familiar Stanley logo and award-winning packaging graphics, licensed products and collateral marketing materials create a seamless presentation of the Stanley brand at retail. The channels of distribution for licensed products are consistent with Stanley's own channels, including the world's two largest retailers, The Home Depot and Wal*Mart.

Stanley Works operates in three segments. The first two segments--construction/DIY and industrial--sell branded carpenter, mechanic, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools. The former sells to consumers--especially through big-box retailers--while the latter sells to professionals both directly and through distribution. The third segment, security systems, provides integration, installation, and service for Stanley's mechanical and electronic entry systems.

The Stanley Works was founded in 1843, in New Britian, Connecticut. It was originally established to make iron door lock bolts. Frederick Trent Stanley established a company philosophy of striving for excellence that continues to this day. This philosphy carried the company through times of financial hardship when many competing foundries failed. The company expanded into other hardware items and tools. The company has been so tremendously successful that these days Stanley tools and Stanley woodworking tools are found in almost every home or commercial workshop.
