After Stanley Kubrick completed Paths of Glory he tried working on a big Hollywood movie called Spartacus in 1960. The film made a lot of money and was a success but Kubrick did not enjoy working on it. He did not enjoy working on it because of problems he had with the other people working on the film who controled it. Kubrick desired to have a lot of control in making his films, and after making Spartacus he only worked on films that he had full control over.
Kubrick went back to working with Harris on his controversial adaptation of Vladimir Nabakov's Lolita. After pressure from a number of groups Kubrick moved the filming to Britain, where he ended up settling down with Christiane Harlan, and fathering three daughters. The film was released in 1962 and its success enabled Kubrick to use the film as a powerful bargaining chip with MGM. He managed to secure a deal whereby he had total control over the entire film making process, from the purchase of the film rights, to the design of the marketing materials, which eventually led to his reputation as a control freak.

foto With Stanley everything was different. He would advise all the cast to use their own car. For the crew Stanley bought four small pick ups, Volkswagen mini-van. One for the cameraman and his equipment, one for the costume department, one for the electricians, one for food and drinks. At the end of the movie, pick ups were sold to half the price to the people that used them and this was considered a kind bonus. Thus Stanley saved two thirds in opposition to a middle hollywoodian production.
Kubrick has been acknowledged, but not completely accepted by his peers and critics. He is an outsider in the specialized game of filmmaking. After moving to Britain to film Lolita in 1962 he chose to keep residence there, thusly alienating himself from the glamour, stars and distractions of Hollywood. He dismisses the lifestyle and benefits received by other filmmakers sharing his status. He refusal to become one of the "family" has resulted in a wary acceptance of his talent. Although he has been nominated 12 times, he has yet to receive an Academy Award:
