Stanley Kubrick: Full Metal Jacket
built 186 days ago
Having turned down directing a sequel to The Exorcist, in 1980, Kubrick made his own horror film: The Shining. The film was a financial success but critics were generally not as receptive and there were no Oscar nominations at all. Kubrick's following work has been well spaced. Kubrick’s next film, Full Metal Jacket, was released seven years after his last film (1987). By this time, Kubrick was married with children and had extensively remodeled his house. Full Metal Jacket continued Kubrick's legacy of solid critical acclaim, and profited at the box office.

In 1987, Kubrick released Full Metal Jacket, based on Gustav Hasford's novel The Short-Timers. A brutal look at Marine basic training and the subsequent combat experiences of a group of recruits sent to Vietnam, the film tackled one of Kubrick's favorite themes-dehumanization, particularly amid war and violence. But some moviegoers and critics took issue with the fact that he insisted on shooting the movie in London rather than in a more appropriate locale. To make his sets look as authentic as possible, Kubrick demolished a number of 1930s-era buildings to create his own rubble, brought in palm trees from Spain, and imported over 100, 000 plastic tropical plants from Hong Kong.

His output has been meager ever since: ... though he no longer achieved the quality of his greatest works, the Kubrick touch was still there to a lesser degree. Barry Lyndon may not be his most admired film, but it still received seven Oscar nominations (including one for best picture), the most for any Kubrick film. The Shining (a 1980 film starring Jack Nicholson based on a Stephen King novel) is now considered one of the finest horror films ever made. And his 1987 film Full Metal Jacket may not match either Apocalypse Now or Platoon when it comes to Vietnam War dramas, but it had its moments, and holds the curious honor of inspiring the 2 Live Crew's shameless hit "Me So Horny", which samples a snippet of dialogue from the film.

On Sunday, May 28 through Tuesday, May 30, the New Beverly Cinema will be featuring a special Stanley Kubrick double feature. Preceding The Shining each day will be a showing of the famed director's equally disturbing 1987 film, Full Metal Jacket , about the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam war has on a handful of army recruits. It stars Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin and Vincent D'Onofrio.
In 1980 Kubrick produced what many critics regard as the ultimate horror film, The Shining, based on the novel by Stephen King and starring Jack Nicholson. Full Metal Jacket (1987) saw Kubrick return to the subject of war, this time the Vietnam conflict, as seen through the eyes of a U.S. Marine played by Matthew Modine.

Kubrick's subsequent work has been well spaced: it was seven years before Full Metal Jacket (1987) was released. By this time, Kubrick was married with children and had extensively remodeled his house. Seen by one critic as the dark side to the humanist story of Platoon (1986), Full Metal Jacket (1987) continued Kubrick's legacy of solid critical acclaim, and profit at the box office.
