Stanley Cup: Ottawa Senators
built 393 days ago
After a night of celebrating their Stanley Cup victory in 1905, members of the Ottawa Silver Seven felt it necessary to see if one could kick the Cup into Ottawa's Rideau Canal. One of them lined it up and gave it a boot, drop-kick style. In a true test of his accuracy and distance, the Cup landed on target, in the canal. That established, the boys went on their merry way, and the Cup stayed in the Canal until the next day when sober heads prevailed and Lord Stanley's mug was rescued. It was then placed in the capable hands of Harry Smith, a Silver Seven member.

Lord Stanley appointed Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross as trustees of the Cup. Sweetland and Ross first presented the trophy in 1893 to the Montreal Hockey Club (usually referred to as the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association), the champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC), since they "defeated all comers during the late season, including the champions of the Ontario Association [the Ottawa Generals]".[9] Sweetland and Ross ... believed that the AHAC was the top league, and thus first place in the AHAC entitled Montreal to be called the best team in Canada.[10] Naturally, the Ottawa Generals were upset by the decision because there had been no challenge games scheduled, and because the trustees failed to convey the rules on how the Cup was to be awarded prior to the start of the season.[10]
