Stanley Cup: Lord Stanley
built 393 days ago
The Stanley Cup, oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, was donated in 1892 by Sir Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby, in 1893. He purchased the trophy for 10 Guineas ($50.00 at that time) to be presented to "the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada."
Then NHL President Clarence Campbell and the Cup in 1957. Lord Stanley himself never saw a game where his trophy was on the line, nor did he ever present the Cup bearing his name. Although his term of governor general ended in September of 1893, he was forced to return to England on July 15. In April of that year, his elder brother, the 15th Earl of Derby, died, and Stanley succeeded him as the 16th Earl of Derby.[5]
Lord Stanley It's for the Stanley Cup that the players fight, season after season. And it's of the Stanley Cup that all hockey players dream, from childhood onwards. The Cup, symbol of excellence in the world of hockey, owes its name to Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada. In 1892, he bought a small gold-plated silver bowl from a London silversmith, for $50. The bowl was awarded to the best hockey team in Canada.

The first Stanley Cup Originally, Lord Stanley planned for the Cup to be used as a trophy given out to the top amateur hockey team in Canada, to be decided by the acceptance of a challenge from another team. He made five preliminary regulations on how it should be governed:[3][6]
One of the principal goals of the visit to Cranbrook for Rob was to get photographs with the Stanley Cup at the top of Bull Mountain, which can be seen from his home. Scott had done similar shots on an earlier visit and they are among the most spectacular shots ever taken with the Lord Stanley’s legacy.
