Ducks defenseman Joe DiPenta joined an exclusive group of players who have won both a Calder Cup and a Stanley Cup in their careers, a group that includes Ace Bailey, Johnny Bower, Adam Graves, Larry Robinson, Patrick Roy and Billy Smith. DiPenta won an AHL championship with Chicago in 2002.

Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke isn't sure what moves he will make at this weekend's NHL draft because three of his four top players aren't sure they will be back next season to defend the Stanley Cup. As of Tuesday afternoon, Burke said Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer were still contemplating retirement, and goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere is just 11 days from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
There aren't many similarities between the Ducks and the Hurricanes, the 2006 Stanley Cup winners and the first champions of the post-lockout NHL. Perhaps that's because the Ducks really didn't need to emulate anyone; they enjoyed a special situation in terms of personnel.
It takes more than filling the net, though, to win the Stanley Cup. Buffalo isn’t nearly as proficient at stopping the puck, the club’s 2.82 goals against per game ranks 13th in the league. Ryan Miller has been very good as Buffalo’s No. 1 goalie with a .917 save percentage, but even in today’s twine-bulging NHL, there are 10 regular netminders with better save percentages, including Anaheim’s Jean-Sebastien Giguere at .924.
John Allaway, the Ducks’ assistant equipment manager, took the Stanley Cup to Gates, New York on Tuesday, August 21. Allaway has been with the team since its inception, joining the Ducks after having worked with the Buffalo Sabres.
