For the purpose of stamp collecting, postage stamps are by far the most popular. Originating in Great Britain circa 1834, the first prepaid envelopes for the purpose of mailing were created in 1940. Following shortly after, the first postage stamp called the Penny Black was created in the same year.
Stamp collectors are an important source of revenue for some small countries who create limited runs of elaborate stamps designed mainly to be bought by stamp collectors. The stamps produced by these countries far exceed the postal needs of the countries.
The United States isn't the only country to get involved with stamp collecting by celebrating at a specific time. In Germany, "Tag der Briefmarke" means "Stamp Day," and it is celebrated every two years with a special semipostal stamp.

During the first 20 years that postage stamps were in use, the widespread popularity of collecting them prompted the publication of stamp catalogs. The first lists of collectible stamps were published in France in 1861 by Oscar Berger-Levrault of Strasbourg and by Alfred Potiquet of Paris.

When you first start stamp collecting you will probably get most of your stamps from pieces of envelopes. Firstly, when cutting the piece off the envelope, take care not to cut the stamp.
