Stamp Collecting: People
built 641 days ago
Collectors found that if they were able to come across an older stamp that it would be worth much more than its face value due to the rarity of finding unused stamps in mint condition. As a result of this, they began saving stamps throughout the 1930’s in hopes of having a valuable mint stamp years later. This idea backfired because too many people had the same idea and as a result one can still find a surplus of unused, mint condition stamps from this era even today. Typically the rare stamps found today that are worth a substantial amount would be those souvenir sheets from other countries, certain plate number coils or printing mistakes.

Most people who enjoy collecting stamps likely don’t have a local shop to visit which has stamp collecting supplies. The casual collector may store his stamps in a standard photo album, for example, but there are similar items designed specifically for collecting stamps. These will add to the enjoyment of the hobby and allow you to present your stamps in a safer and more elegant manner.

Over the years collecting stamps can be divided into many different classifications. One of the most popular ones is collecting stamps from someone's country. Everyone loves their home country and having a piece of its history is basically one of the things that postage stamps give you. Each one has a little story behind it and you would be surprised at how many people know the stories behind the stamps that they collect. Presidential and heads of state are another important collecting interest among collectors. It seems that people have a love affair with authority figures and that could have something to do with it. Other really popular collecting subjects are animals, sports, vehicles, transportation.

The Mathematical Study Unit of the American Topical Association is a small (several hundred) group of people who are interested in collecting stamps that portray a mathematical theme. The United States has not issued many such stamps (even if you stretch the point), but surprisingly worldwide many such stamps have been issued. The MSU publishes a journal Philamath that has many interesting articles. Here is a sample issue: Philamath.

Most stamp collectors take up the hobby because they enjoy stamps and not for monetary gain. Some people collect stamps for their beauty. Many countries produce more stamps than they can use so that they can sell them to collectors. They devise extraordinary stamps to lure collectors to their stamps. It’s a great source of revenue.
