Stalking: Cases
built 185 days ago
Perhaps the best-known case of erotomania stalking involved a series of incidents perpetrated against the popular late night talk show host, David Letterman. This woman, first found hiding in Mr. Letterman's closet, believed she was his wife. On numerous other occasions she was caught trespassing on his property. With her young son in tow, she once scaled the six foot wall surrounding Letterman's property. On another occasion, she was arrested while driving Letterman's stolen car. When questioned by police, she confidently stated that her husband was out of town and that she was going grocery shopping so she would have dinner ready for him upon his return.

The seriousness of the crime of stalking is seen in the facts surrounding the Rebecca Schaeffer murder case. In 1986, while living in Tucson, Arizona, Bardo saw Schaeffer on the television series, "My Sister Sam." He began writing fan letters to her, and received a card and autographed picture of her, which validated his delusion of their "mutual attraction." In 1988, he started making trips from Arizona to Los Angeles in the hope of contacting her. On each trip he brought candy and stuffed animals and on each trip he was turned away by the studio security. He then saw her in her first movie and grew infuriated when he saw her in bed with a male character. Feeling betrayed, he told his sister that he had to save her and the only way of saving her was to kill her. He had read a magazine how Arthur Jackson located Theresa Saldana’s address through the DMV and hired a private investigator to locate Schaeffer’s address in the same manner.
The rapidly growing interest in stalking is spawning a new area of "specialization" among professionals whose roles regularly involve them in such cases. Yet, even the most experienced among such professionals would readily admit that they are just beginning to understand the complex problems that stalking poses for both victims and society-at-large. Most of these professionals agree that solutions to the problem of stalking are not likely to be found without a considerable amount of additional research.

Many other stalking cases are not sexually-motivated at all. It must be recalled that the essence of stalking is, besides as a means to obtain private information about someone else, sometimes a way of inflicting menace. This is a tactic commonly employed by underworld organisations against their enemies, and many unscrupulous debt-collection agencies employ underworld-associated people to use this capability to their advantage, often victimising the innocent.
Additionally, the economic security of stalking victims may be shattered as a result of their victimization. The NIJ study provides an empirical perspective indicating that 25% of stalking victims lost time from work as a result of being targeted and another 7% said that they were unable to return to work altogether. In some more egregious cases, victims have been fired by unsympathetic employers unwilling to accommodate special needs of victim employees.
