At half-time St Johnstone were 3-1 up, but it was Gretna who were in the promotion spot as they led Ross County. During the break, Coyle told his players to expect more twists and turns, but even he couldn't have predicted what was to follow.

Given that St Johnstone now has a new Manager in place, tonight’s match would prove to be even more difficult for United. Confidence within the Tannadice ranks should be reasonably high... after their recent victories against Dumbarton and Hearts. The back four is reshuffled once again for this CIS Cup encounter, with Jim Lauchlan returning at Hasney Aljofree's expense.

St Johnstone then had Celtic under siege for the rest of the contest. Scotland eluded his markers in the 74th minute to stab the ball between Boruc's legs, only for Stephen McManus to slide the ball away from the empty net.

Gordon Chisholm patched together a team to face St Johnstone with most of his pre-match doubts eventually declaring fit, even if there was some concern over some of them. There was no Steve Tosh nor Neil McFarlane but Sean O'Connor started despite having had knee surgery 12 days earlier and Eric Paton ... returned from injury. New signing David Nixon, on loan from Motherwell, took over the problem left centre back role alongside captain Jim Thomson whilst Brian Gilmour and John O'Neill stepped up from the subs bench against Dunfermline to take starting shirts. Messrs Aitken, Burns, Bingham and Dobbie made up the bench along with goalkeeper Stephen Grindlay. Owen Coyle too though had his problems with long term absentees Kevin James, Martin Hardie and Steven Milne unavailable for a Perth side on a run of eight matches unbeaten.

By 1990, St Johnstone were back in the Scottish First Division (second tier) and in 1997 they stormed to the divisional championship, 20 points clear. They more than held their own in the Premier Division/Premier League, reaching the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, the final of the League Cup and finishing third in third place in 1999. As a result they qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time. Although the club were relegated in 2002, they have remained a strong contender for a return to the top flight.

Eight minutes after their own game had finished in a thrilling 4-3 win over Hamilton, some 3000 St Johnstone fans were given official confirmation of the scoreline from Victoria Park. Gretna had won at the death, and with cruel timing for their challengers some 200 miles further south.
