Incidentally, Hardie was the match-winner when both sides last met back in April, as St Johnstone secured a slender 1-0 win at Broadwood that helped their SPL push at the time. Owen Coyle's side beat the Bully Wee twice last season with wins both home and away, after a Clyde win at Broadwood and a McDiarmid Park draw altogether.

On April 14, 2007, St. Johnstone were beaten 2-1 by Celtic at Hampden in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. By then Coyle's name was being consistently linked with managerial vacancies in the SPL.

"It is the nature of football," observed Coyle, the St Johnstone manager attempting pragmatism amid tears from both fans and players. "We love football because there are so many highs and lows. But this one was certainly hard to take. As many times as you are on a high there is a kick in the teeth around the corner and this was probably the worst one ever today."

Coyle took charge of St Johnstone in 2005. He previously had a spell as co-player-manager at Falkirk with John Hughes. In his playing career, he made one appearance for Ireland in 1994 and represented Airdrieonians, Dundee United, Motherwell and Bolton.
