Spyware: Programs
built 134 days ago
Spyware is Internet jargon for any data collection program that secretly gathers information about you and relays it to advertisers and other interested parties. Adware usually displays banners or unwanted pop-up windows, but often includes spyware as well.

The ASC [Anti-Spyware Coalition] drafted a definition of “spyware” in August 2005. The ASC defines “spyware and other potentially unwanted technologies” as those that “impair users’ control over material changes that affect their user experience, privacy, or system security; use of their system resources, including what programs are installed on their computers; or collection, use, and distribution of their personal or otherwise sensitive information.”

Spyware is not to be confused with adware, BHO (Browser Help Objects), or redirection tools. Although they are sometimes unpleasant, the latter do not transmit personal data. Spyware may ... be mistakenly confused with cookies and Web bugs, which are not programs but micro-image or data files, the access of which may be redirected or tracked and might sometimes violate privacy.

If you're worried about Spyware and Adware, you should be. Almost every PC in the world has been or will be infected by them. Why are Spyware and Adware so dangerous? First of all, they cause your system to become unstable and even more importantly, they put you at a severe risk of becoming the victim of identity theft. Because the risks are so high, it's vital that you protect yourself from these horrendous programs.
