One of very few true dating games to make it to North American consoles, the Nintendo DS launch title Sprung is an amorous, lighthearted social simulation that takes place in a ski resort. While Japan is known for producing a wide variety of games in the style, Sprung was developed internally by French publisher Ubisoft. Players take the role of a single man or a woman who is hoping to hook up with a member of the opposite gender. The basic game plays out like a text adventure, with images of different scenes and characters displayed along with brief descriptions of the current situation and multiple-choice player reactions. The game challenges its players' smooth-talking sensibilities in over 50 conversational missions, with titles such as "Secret Admirer," "The Sketchy Ex-Boyfriend," "Hot Chick Scavenger Hunt." ~ T.J.

Sprung The best kept secret in New York may be that black gay men are meeting up outside of the thugged-out late night clubs. Sure, the all-night parties still draw hundreds and hundreds of people each week, but thanks to new social venues, that's not the only option anymore. And conversation is actually back in vogue.... The one thing that Sprung has going in its favor is a sleek presentation. Few DS games are using the dual-screen function in useful ways, but Sprung's approach makes a lot of sense and is actually very effective. A medium shot of your character is always displayed on the bottom screen while the person you are talking to appears on the top. It keeps the overall interface clean and gives the conversation a more authentic overtone. The art... is memorable, adding basic colors to realistic drawings to make it more cartoony. Characters are able to portray a wide range of emotions thanks to some good, seamless animation.

Though it doesn't really push the technical capabilities of the DS, Sprung does have a fairly distinct look to it, and it uses 2D sprites to represent the characters. The game's European's roots are fairly apparent in the art style, which is reminiscent of a French comic book. The characters look appropriately glossy and hip, and even the "dirty hippy" character is attractive, well dressed, and well groomed. Each character has a handful of emotive animations, which themselves are fairly smooth and effective, but because of their limited numbers, these animations repeat fairly often, and they don't always match the tone of the dialogue they accompany. With the dialogue written in text, the game's soundtrack fills in the void and actually does a pretty good job of it. Each location has a unique tune, so a crunky hip-hop beat plays when you're in the club, for example. Furthermore, there's some situation-specific music as well.
