Sprites: Elves

Figure 2(a) shows one of these unusual events, each of which consists of a closely associated -CG flash, an elves event, and accompanying sprites. NLDN recorded a -97 kA stroke (event 17 in Figure 1) at 06:15:16.305 UT. The polarity of the sferics recorded at Langmuir and at Stanford (Figure 2) is unambiguous at this range and confirm the polarity of the lightning. The bearing to this stroke, as well as the altitudes overlying its location, are shown on the video image. The video's pointing direction was determined with star field alignment. Photometers 1 through 9 show the distinctive signature [Inan et al., 1997; Barrington-Leigh and Inan, 1999] of elves, the flash due to widespread heating of the lower ionosphere by the electromagnetic pulse of lightning.

Watersong sprites, as their name suggests, live near large bodies of water. They jokingly divide themselves into Salt and Sweet, referring to the type of water they live by. These sprites all tend to have more blue than most in their body coloring, sometimes with stripes or swirls of blue or blue-green. Watersong are especially adept at swimming and have muscular, extra-graceful bodies as a result. Further, this bloodline is famous among sprites for the lavish, extended parties its families throw, and especially well-known for the culinary delicacies at these parties. It is ... a well-known fact that members of this bloodline have very high alcohol tolerance, and several have publicly embarrassed humans and elves by drinking them under the table.

Spectacular display of sprites from MCS which formed in Texas/Oklahoma panhandle area and slowly moved north-northeast during the night. It has a fairly high flash rate but percent +CG's stayed below 10% most of the time. The system was not very large (15,000 km2). A series of huge complex carrots, some with elves, were imaged. They were very regular, and then suddenly stopped as the radar echo changed characteristics. The viewing was exceptionally good and clear images were obtained at 500-600km.
