There are organizations that offer alternative Spring Break vacations in lieu of traditional “party” travel. These trips tend to be sponsored by churches, schools or other organizations and are focused on service learning or educational travel. This year, many students are using their break to help in Katrina disaster relief efforts and other service-type vacations.

For those who want to break away from the party scene, alternative spring break programs have become quite popular both in the United States and Internationally. These are typically outreach programs that offer active participation on trips to provide aid to the disadvantaged or to help clean up the environment. There is an opening for an Arcadia staff member to join students on the alternative spring break trip to Tijuana, Mexico. The group will work with Esperanza International to help build homes as part of an Arcadia Community Service project. Alternative spring break trips are becoming more popular. For more charity oriented students, package trips are available to help people in poor countries, experience nature, and other activities outside the typical party scene. There are many Universities now offering such trips to their students, many campus organizations have themed trips such as the outdoors program hosting a camping and nature clean-up trip and the local Habitat for Humanity featuring a building trip for students. This past year (2006) many students poured into New Orleans to help with the re-building and restoration of the city.

This is an alternative spring break trip to the small village of Balgue, on the island of Ometepe. The main focus of this trip is to help with literacy development by developing a small library of text books and literature. Students will be living and working on a coffee cooperative called Finca Magdalena.
