Since the end of World War II, negro spirituals and Gospel songs have been popular in France and other European countries. The most famous French quartet group was Les Compagnons du Jourdain who performed between the 1950s and the 1970s.

The codes of the first negro spirituals are often related with an escape to a free country. For example, a “home” is a safe place where everyone can live free. So, a “home” can mean Heaven, but it covertly means a sweet and free country, a haven for slaves.

   This hypothesis may have some basis in fact but, as a sole theory of their development, this idea devalues Spirituals. As one expert wrote, "Spirituals exorcized and negated the evil powers of slavery and racism." They are the legacy of a people who faced one of the most horrific injustices one man can place on another with courage and creativity.

Some other amateur groups have ... sung spirituals and Gospel songs. An example is The Gospel Messengers (Les Messagers). Now, Spiritual Workshop Paris sings negro spirituals and Gospel songs (created before 1970).
