Spiders: United States

These are the very large, hairy spiders, up to 15 centimeters or more in diameter (6 inches), frequently used in horror movies. A number of smaller, native species exist in the southern United States, but none occur naturally in Washington. However, tarantulas are sold and are kept as pets. Unfortunately, some of those sold as pets have extremely venomous body hairs (Fig. 4).
Leptorhoptrum robustum In the United States, brown recluse spiders are found mostly in the Midwest and Southwest. Brown recluse venom causes a small, dry, irregular necrotic lesion that heals very slowly. Contrary to popular belief, brown recluse bites cannot be conclusively diagnosed from the wound. Serious medical conditions including Lyme disease, chemical burn, and Anthrax infection have been misdiagnosed as brown recluse bites, delaying proper treatment. It is not uncommon for such misdiagnoses to occur outside the range of the brown recluse spider.

Only a few spiders are dangerous to humans. Two that are present in the contiguous United States and more common in the Southern states are the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. Both prefer warm climates and dark, dry places where flies are plentiful. They often live in dry, littered, undisturbed areas, such as closets, woodpiles and under sinks.

Spider webs. Occasionally, a group of spiders may build webs together in the same area. One such web reported in 2007 at Lake Tawakoni State Park in Texas measured 200 yards (180 m) across. Entomologists believe it may be the result of social cobweb spiders or of spiders building webs to spread out from one another. There is no consensus on how common this occurrence is.[5]
Uloborus diversus Widow spiders are widespread in the United States. Black widow venom is a neurotoxin. Typical symptoms of envenomation include swelling of the lymphatic nodes, profuse sweating, rigidity of the abdominal muscles, facial contortions, and hypertension. Antivenom is available to counteract the effects of

Widow spiders are typically jet black, but their color can vary considerably. Males and juveniles tend to show more color, with orange, red and white markings on the back and sides. On the underside of their rounded abdomen are two reddish triangles that may be united to form an hourglass shape.
