Spiders: People

camel spiders Have you seen this picture and read the usual accompanying story about "camel spiders" or "Fallujah spiders" in Iraq that anesthetize and eat people alive? This is a hoax. The arachnids in the picture are not spiders, they are solpugids and they have no venom. They eat roly-poly bugs, crickets, and scorpions. And they aren't just in Iraq; they are found in deserts. There are some in the southwest U.S. Also, notice that the picture was taken to make these arachnids look bigger.

For the most part, all spiders have jaws and fangs to deliver venom. However, most spider bites have little or no effect on humans. The exceptions include people with compromised immune systems or other medical conditions that leave them vulnerable to spider venoms. Most spiders are too small to be of concern to humans. The fangs of these tiny creatures cannot penetrate the human epidermis unless the spider is held in place and allowed to bite the very thin skin between the fingers or toes. Larger spiders can bite, but they are shy and will attempt to escape unless trapped between the skin and some other object (e.g., clothing, sheets, and shoes).

Myths and a few fatal poisonings have made many people afraid of spiders. The only dangerous spiders in the northeast... are the very rare black widow and brown recluse spiders. These spiders are not native to the northeast, but may be occasionally transported here (the brown recluse is from the southwestern United States and the black widow is from the southern United States). Other spiders may be annoying due to their webs, but, unpopular as they are, most spiders are shy and harmless to humans. Most have fangs too small or weak to puncture human skin. They usually will not attempt to bite unless accidentally trapped or held.

That being said, none of these spiders move into human territory with the intention of biting people. People blunder into them, and the spiders defend themselves by biting. The Sydney tunnel-web spider is restricted to a relatively small area around Sydney, Australia. The Brazilian wandering spider reportedly may hitch a ride in clusters of banannas. As a result, any large spider appearing in a bunch of bannanas should be treated with due care.

Black widow spiders are recognized by most people. They have a characteristic body shape, are black, and have the hourglass markings on the bottom of the abdomen. They like basement window wells, eaves, wood piles and similar places to live. They can be common behind furniture in houses that is not moved often. Their bite can be quite painful. People live with them all the time and chances of being bitten are slim.

Encounters between people and spiders are usually accidental and bites are a response by the spider when its web or nest is disturbed. Most spiders produce venom therefore, they could be considered "poisonous". The venom is stored in glands that empty into the spider's fangs or chelicerae. For the most part, spider bites are insignificant. However, just as bee and wasp stings may trigger allergic reactions in some people, the same can be true for spider bites. Young children, the elderly and hypersensitive individuals are more likely to react more strongly to a spider bite.
