Spiders can be found living in almost every habitat on earth. The only place that spiders are not found is only the harshest environments on Earth, the North and South poles, the highest mountains and the ocean. Some spiders have been found near the ocean, living in coral near the ocean edge.

In England, spiders were known as "money makers." If found on clothing, they were a sign that money was on the way, provided that the spider was not killed. (April, 2004) There was a story doing the rounds from Iraq about the 2 spiders in the photo on the right. It is another hoax. These are camel spiders or solfugids - Galeodes granti which are rather common in the areas that the American troops are right now. They are relatively harmless arachnids (no venom) but they have a significant "bite".

Black widow spiders can be found in all four deserts of the American Southwest, including the Sonoran Desert where Phoenix is located. There are different types of widow spiders, and all of them are venomous to varying degrees.
