The tarantula is probably the most feared of spiders. It is very big and can stretch itself almost to the size of a one-foot ruler - 10 inches. It is furry, unlike other spiders. It is a nocturnal animal and comes out at night to find food. It is large enough to eat many animals that smaller spiders can't catch. It can eat big beetles, toads and frogs.

In China spiders are part of the Wu Tu or five poisonous animals... they are also reverred as the apostles of Confucius and thus possess much wisdom. In Japan the spider god is a great tactical genius and in Italy the garden spider Araneus diadematus was honoured because of the white cross on its back. The wisdom of spiders is also reflected in their use in divination, widely disparate cultures such as those in Bali, Indonesia and Cameroon in Africa used spiders, amongst other animals as a means to see into the future.

Most folks who retell this tale have no idea that they are referring to two completely separate groups of animals: "daddy-longlegs" and "daddy-longlegs spiders". In the animal class Arachnida, there are several lower level divisions called Orders. Scorpions are in the Order Scorpiones, spiders are in the Order Araneae, ticks and mites are in the Order Acari.

Australian animals are made very dangerous by documentaries featuring sharks, box yellies, crocodiles, snakes and spiders, most of the time killing ferociously other creatures. Sometimes they are caught by fearless hunters in four-wheel drives or +2000 hp boats. It is true, bites of crocodiles, sharks and black mambas are to be avoided.
