Spice World: Spice Girls
built 634 days ago
The "Girl Power" publicity machine was humming long before the lights dimmed at the San Francisco "Spice World" screening. Twelve-year-old girls rushed the stage as flacks dangled Spicy gifts -- Spice pencils, Spice posters, Spice T-shirts, Spice CDs -- before the kids' eager faces. "Hey, I neeeeeeeeeed one!" screeched one girl from the balcony. In lieu of previews, an MC coordinated a Spice wave throughout the theater, as every fan undulated to the Spice Girl beat. The pre-game festivities were the perfect segue into "Spice World" -- which, in essence, is one big pep rally for the group.

"Spice World" doesn't answer any questions about why the Spice Girls are so popular, or exactly when they're going away. But it does provide evidence about which of them is the most annoying.

Variety is the spice of Spiceworld. The LP seems less a song cycle than a series of aural production numbers. "Spice Up Your Life," the first single, is a global call to arms and legs with a distinct carnivallike flavor and a message of Up With Spice People positivity. "Stop" is a retro, Supremes-lite confection that's as undeniable as it is unoriginal. The big finish, "The Lady Is a Vamp," is a vaudevillian track that name-checks Jackie O., Twiggy and Ziggy Marley among those who the Spice Girls apparently feel are "legends built to last."
It's entirely possible that bands are scared off by the candy-colored flipside to Night's black-and-white beauty, Spice World. Just to clarify, that's the Spice Girls movie, not a film about the fifteenth century spice trade. You may remember it from a variety of instant punchlines circa the turn of the last century.
