Spencer Tracy was one of Hollywood's biggest stars from the 1930s through the 1960s, and the first actor to win consecutive Oscars for Best Actor (for 1937's Captains Courageous and 1938's Boys Town). Tracy grew up in Wisconsin, where he attended Ripon College. In the early 1920s he struck out for New York City to make it as an actor. He studied at the Academy of Dramatic Arts and managed to get a few small roles, but didn't get his big break until 1930. His performance in the play The Last Mile impressed John Ford, who brought Tracy to Hollywood and the movies. Although not especially handsome, his naturalistic style and simple earnestness made him a favorite of actors and audiences.

Spencer Tracy Spencer Tracy was one of the most venerated American actors in history. It wasn't just the movie-going public that held him in such high regard. His fellow actors ... consider him one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. The enormous respect and admiration he commanded was well-deserved. He was the first actor to ever win back-to-back Oscars for Captains Courageous, in 1937, and Boys Town, in 1938 (a record matched only by Tom Hanks more than half a century later). Spence garnered a total of nine Academy Award nominations, which is more than any actor in his lifetime.
Spencer Tracy One of the biggest regrets of Norma Shearer’s career was a lack of pairings between her and Spencer Tracy, and she clearly had good reasons for that. The man was a terrific actor, and decided that he didn’t need to make any classic such as Shakespeare to get recognition for his talent. As Clark Gable said, “He’s the best, and the bastard knows it.” But he was extremely uncomfortable in such a profession which required him to get in touch with his inner feelings and personal demons. That fact that his performances never gave a hint to that uneasiness only proves how talented the man truly was. Considering he worked in an era of original screen personalities and horrible, histrionic acting, Spencer Tracy is indeed a true acting genius –one that deserves more praise than most recognize.
