The idea behind Speedball was inspired largely by the James Caan film, Rollerball. Two teams on a field fighting for possession of a metal sphere the size of a baseball, beating the bejesus out of each other because rules like "unsportsmanlike conduct" don't exist. The team that scores the most goals by full-time wins the game. Additional points are won by throwing the ball at bonus stars and loops on the side of the field. There are ... power-ups to be collected for extra speed, throwing power and so on; and there are warp zones and bounce pads placed at strategic sections of the field.

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxescreenshot Gameplay aside, Speedball 2 was a success in 1991 because it boasted great visuals and some impressive audio. Occasionally hearing a vendor working the crowd with cries of "Ice cream! Ice cream!" during slow-motion replays of goals was a delight back in the day, but now that the sample is played after every single goal it doesn't take long for the novelty to wear thin. Surprisingly, the original game's visuals hold up a little better than the audio, though that's thanks in no small part to the fact that the "enhanced" HD visuals actually manage to look worse.

Speedball is different from woods ball and scenario games that used to be played in the beginning of the sport. In speedball, you and your opponent are on enclosed field and within sight of each other. The field of play is divided by numerous sizes and shapes of bunkers. From the middle to your edge of the field on your side, the bunkers are arranged in some fashion. The opposing teams’ side is a mirrored setup of what you have. So each side has equal bunkers.
When vastly powerful megalomaniac the Sphinx scattered the Warriors throughout the timestream, Speedball was trapped in the kinetic energy dimension that spawned his powers. Robbie's time-spanning presence there was detected in the year 2092 by father-and-son research scientists Kyle and Darrion Grobe, who used that dimension to power their time travel invention, the bioelectric time shell. Pressured into prematurely testing the time shell after corporate backers Alchemax threatened to cut off their funding, Kyle time-shifted into the past, but a molecular inversion transformed him into the mad time-warping cyborg Advent, whose temporal manipulations threatened all existence. Seeking to undo this disaster via time travel but unwilling to risk becoming another Advent, Darrion devised an alternate means of time travel via the kinetic dimension, but only Speedball could survive that dimension's energies for long. To get around this limitation, Darrion created a complete mental and physical duplicate of Speedball and downloaded his own consciousness into it. As the duplicate Speedball, Grobe went back through time via the kinetic dimension to the modern era, where he impersonated Robbie and Speedball for nearly a year.
