The new "Speed Racer" cartoon is set to launch next year, around the same time that Warner Bros.' live-action "Speed Racer," directed by the Wachowskis, hits theaters. "It seemed like the right time to do a revival," said Ken Katsumoto, exec VP of family entertainment at Lionsgate. "When this opportunity arose to revive such a classic property, we jumped."

Slated for release on May 9, 2008, “Speed Racer the Movie” marks the Wachowski brothers’ first writing/directing collaboration since “The Matrix” movies. Joel Silver, who previously worked with the Wachowskis on “The Matrix” movies and “V For Vendetta,” is producing the film under his Silver Pictures banner.

In Speed Racer, players take on the role of the characters from the film, getting behind the wheels of each character’s signature vehicles to experience firsthand the film’s high adrenaline, combative racing style. The car-fu style of action within the game closely represents the action style designed by the Wachowski brothers for the film.

The hit animated phenomenon, originally adopted from the Japanese anime "Mach Go Go Go" in the 60s, is back, this time around it’s on the big screen as Speed Racer the movie, set to race into theatres May 9, 2008. Created by the Wachowski Brothers, the writers of The Matrix trilogy, the film promises to be action packed with revolutionary visual effects.

Warner Brothers Interactive (WBI) is at the wheel of this project and plans to release the Speed Racer game in tune with the theatrical release of the film next year. The game is, as expected, a racing title that allows you to play as one of the film’s main characters, and according to WBI, “will closely represent the action style being designed by for the film by the Wachowski brothers as they lend direction and assets to the development team.”
