Species are distinctly different kinds of organisms. Birds of one species are, under most circumstances, incapable of interbreeding with individuals of other species. Indeed, the "biological species concept" centers on this inability to successfully hybridize, and is what most biologists mean by "distinctly different." That concept works very well when two different kinds of birds live in the same area. For example, Townsend's and Yellow-rumped Warblers are clearly distinct kinds because their breeding ranges overlap, but they do not mate with one another. If they did, they might produce hybrid young, which in turn could "backcross" to the parental types, and (eventually) this process could cause the two kinds of warblers to lose their distinctness.

Species were unique lifeforms. They were generally divided into three classifications: sentient, semi-sentient, and non-sentient. There were over 20 million sentient species known to the galaxy.[1] Sentient species were sometimes erroneously referred to as races, which more accurately referred to groups or subspecies within a species.[2]

Species pluralists respond to this objection by suggesting criteria for judging the legitimacy of a proposed species concept. (Dupré 1993, Ereshefsky 2001). Such criteria can be used to determine which species concepts should be accepted into the plurality of legitimate species concepts. Candidate criteria are the epistemic virtues that scientists typically use for determining the scientific worthiness of a theory. For example, in judging a species concept, one might ask if the theoretical assumptions of a concept are empirically testable. The Biological Species Concept relies on the assumption that interbreeding causes the existence of stable lineages.

In 2373 the Borg somehow discovered fluidic space and learned that Species 8472 possesses organic spacecraft and a biogenically engineered weapons technology that was superior to anything known to the Borg. Seeking to assimilate this civilization and its technology, the Borg launched an attack on the fluidic space realm, only to be repulsed. Shortly thereafter, Species 8472 launched a retaliatory strike, sending hundreds of powerful bioships into the Delta Quadrant with the goal of eliminating all lifeforms from the galaxy, destroying entire planets and fleets in Borg-occupied space. The 8472 assault was halted when the U.S.S. Voyager collaborated with the Borg to use new nanoprobe technology the crew had developed, a weapon against which the species had no effective defense. It was in the midst of the 8472 battle that Seven of Nine came aboard Voyager and was later severed from the Hive.

This species was named in 2002 to contain fossils found in Dmanisi, Georgia, which seem intermediate between H. habilis and H. erectus. The fossils are about 1.8 million years old, consisting of three partial skulls and three lower jaws. The brain sizes of the skulls vary from 600 to 780 cc. The height, as estimated from a foot bone, would have been about 1.5 m (4'11"). A partial skeleton was ... discovered in 2001 but no details are available on it yet.
