Note: The HTML output from within a Spawn context is never displayed to the browser. While this may seem unhelpful at first, realize that the purpose of Spawn is to allow you to execute very lengthy operations [W]ithout forcing the visitor to wait for them. The WebDNA in the spawned context could update a database several minutes later, wait for a 15 second credit card operation, create a WebDelivery file, or many other useful things.
Cover of Spawn/Batman Polish edition. Art by Todd McFarlane. Spawn has vast magical powers. In the issues before issue #50, Spawn had a limited power supply whose quantity would be shown to the reader in the form of a counter that began at 9:9:9:9. Each time Spawn used his energy, the counter would drain. Because of this, he relied primarily on his costume's natural abilities to fight, or on weapons. Other than the counter, the only limit was Spawn's imagination. Though he always tried not to expend a lot of magic, he has been shown using it for a variety of effects including resurrecting the dead, firing blasts of necroplasmic energy, teleportation, shapeshifting, and curing the sick.
Buy Spawn at Amazon As the film progresses, Spawn learns about the changes going on inside him, as the living armor attached to him grows and he sees all the powers it brings. His mentor in learning this is Cogliostro (Nicol Williamson, The Exorcist III, Excalibur), a medieval knight who has similar powers but wants Spawn to use his gift for good rather than evil. Many, many special effects ensue, the best of which is the living cape that comes out on occasion, which has many uses as well. The film takes you from Earth to Hell and back, until Spawn manages to save the day.

Spawn wears a living symbiotic costume, Leetha of the 7th House of K (aka: K7-Leetha). While wearing it the host assumes a dominant role over his suit. His cape, spikes, chains, and skulls are all part of an organism bonded to his central nervous system that will protect Spawn even if he is unconscious.
Spawn (issue #1 of comic book series) Spawn's name is derived from "Hell spawn" or "Hell's pawn." After Simmons died and went to Hell, he was transformed into Spawn by the devil himself, Malebolgia. Thus, he was literally spawned in Hell. Moreover, he was originally Hell's pawn in the cosmic conflict between Heaven and Hell.
