The Spanish Inquisition was an institution that had precedents in other Inquisitions. The reconquest of Spain from the Moors resulted in a relatively peaceful multi-religious society, but violent antisemitic and anti-Islamic persecution ensued and many Jews and Muslims converted to the Catholic faith or fled.

There were two major Inquisitions, the Medieval Inquisition and Spanish Inquisition. Although there are no exact numbers, scholars believe they have estimated Inquisition deaths reasonably accurately. There were not as many deaths as the popular press claims. Numbers have often been inflated to as high as 9 million by the popular press, with absolutely no scholarly research. This figure is completely erroneous. A broad range of scholars, many of whom were not Catholic, have carefully studied the Inquisitions.

Many Christians who were later declared Catholic saints, such as Ignatius of Loyola and Teresa of Avila, were ... victims of the Spanish Inquisition. It was a despicable, controlling institution. Nonetheless, I believe it is fair, if a reputable network such as the History Channel airs a program on an historical event such as the Inquisition, to write a narrative review without being tarred as a wacko who is accused of denying the existence of the Spanish Inquisition.

No other organization for religious persecution ever equaled the Spanish Inquisition in intensity, scope, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope. From its establishment in 1478 until its abolishment in 1834, no one expected its tribunals, which relentlessly sought to destroy everyone who was not a Roman Catholic Christian.

The Black Legend uses some basic facts regarding the Spanish Inquisition to become a rallying cry for anti-imperialists, and Spanish foes. In other words, the Black Legend was actually a political tool to be used against the world superpower, Catholic Spain.
