Spanish Empire
built 187 days ago
The Spanish Empire generally means Spain's overseas colonies in the Americas, the Pacific, and elsewhere. But it is not clear what is exactly part of the Spanish Empire. For instance, traditionally, territiories such as the Low Countries were included as they were part of the possessions of the King of Spain, governed by Spanish officials, and defended by Spanish troops. But the British historian Henry Kamen writes that these territories were never part of a "Spanish" state and instead formed part of the wider Habsburg estate. Therefore many historians use both "Habsburg" and "Spanish" when they speak of the empire of Charles V or Philip II. Only from an "Anglosaxon" point of view can these observations be accurate since, with all effect, the Low Countries were part of Spain during that period.
Spanish Empire won for the fourth time in 12 races and increased his career earnings to over $156,000. He is owned by the partnership of Jubilee Stable, Twin Creeks Farm, and Martin Cherry.

One of the most effective ways the Spanish used language to consolidate their empire was through controlling history, what was written, what was omitted, and what was published and circulated. The Spanish were successful to a certain extent in imparting their vision, as opposed to the Indians' vision, of the history of the conquest and of the conquered people. The Spanish had control of writing and the means of production of texts, and could effectively control written history. Mignolo speaks of this as the "colonization of memory," implying that the Spanish accounts took the place of those the Indians had in their own minds. <73> But Spanish language policies... did not erase the indigenous memories which were maintained through a strong oral tradition which is still alive.

The great days of Spanish empire lasted under a hundred years. Yet they were great - and they had continuing resonance from Guam to Sicily to California. What the Spaniards brought, in their cut-price, almost diffident way, was knowledge and technological: know-how. What they offered was partnership.
A Spanish priest celebrating mass for Indians, c. 1629 Frontier areas, when not very well supported by a central government months away, are ripe for revolution, and by 1800 the Spanish empire was tottering. Citizens of mixed blood were beginning to do more than just resent the rule of the “pure” Spaniard.
Spanish Empire took six starts to break his maiden, then finished last in his first start versus winners on turf. He was then transferred to trainer Steve Asmussen's barn, for whom he has now won three of four starts, with his lone blemish being a runner-up effort in the Tenacious Handicap on December 6.
