Spanish Civil War: International Brigades
built 278 days ago
In this country, the surviving Spanish Civil War veterans are still working to pass on what they learned. They gathered at the Museum of the City of New York to celebrate its exhibit "Facing Fascism." Like Clarence Kailin and Moe Fishman, Brigade veteran Matti Mattson... in his 90s, preferred to look forward rather than look back. "We have to restore our democratic rights," he said. "We have to get rid of this illegal war."
Founded during the Spanish Civil War in 1937, PLAN International (www.fosterparentsplan.ca) is one of the largest child-focused development organizations. PLAN International strives to make a lasting difference in the lives of children, families and communities in more than 40 developing countries. Through community development programs such as skills training, literacy centers, health clinics and well and bridge construction, more than 11 million people worldwide benefit from PLAN’s work. PLAN has no political or religious affiliations.

The Spanish civil war started as a distinctly Spanish war born out of Spanish disputes but it was soon to take on an international character. It mirrored the political disputes occurring in Europe at the time between Fascism and democracy on one hand and the opposition to godless Communism on the other.
The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was part of an international brigade of men and women who volunteered to fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War from 1936 through 1938. They were ... the first racially integrated U.S. armed forces at all levels of command.

Many Americans favored one side or the other in the Spanish Civil War, particularly people of left-wing sympathies, who supported the Loyalists. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade included Americans who traveled to Spain to fight in the Loyalist cause.

History to the Defeated: Orwell called Auden's "Spain" one of the "only decent things written about the Spanish war." As to the POUM, it is in discussing this phenomenon that Hobsbawm reveals the extent of his obliviousness about the Spanish civil war. He refers with something approaching disdain to “the murder of its leader Andrés Nin [having] caused some international protest.” In reality, as is well-known in Spain today, protests over the brutal murder of Andreu Nin were commoner in Catalonia than outside Spain, and the Catalan Stalinists never overcame the ignominy the crime brought down upon them.
