Space Wars

Packaged in a mammoth, industrial-fridge-sized cabinet, Space Wars may be imposing, but it's hardly original. Larry Rosenthal, creator of the so-called "Vectorbeam" technology, picked a well-worn computer gaming icon that was fun, strategic...and in the public domain.

The roots of Cinematronics' Space Wars can be traced back to the very first (well-known) video game ever created--Spacewar, a mainframe computer game created by Steve Russell at MIT in 1962. Cinematronics' version wasn't the first time the game had been translated to an arcade machine. The first arcade video game, Computer Space, was released by Nutting Associates in 1971. (Computer Space was the brainchild of Nolan Bushnell, who went on to found Atari a year or so later.) Atari went on to release its own take on Spacewar, 1978's Orbit.

Touted as one of the first ad-supported MMMGs to be compatible with nearly all handsets, Space Wars connects players over the mobile Internet and allows them to build, trade, research and battle with each other. Players start with a single planet and limited resources, and use them to create religion to keep their people happy, factories to keep them productive, and research to keep them educated. This translates to fewer revolts, bigger fleets, and faster ships. Although even the fastest ships will sometimes take a fair amount of time to reach their destination.

Space Wars 2400 ... lets you experiment with different gravity settings. Click on the OPTIONS icon at the bottom of the opening screen and enter any number between 0 and 99999 in the field labeled SOLAR GRAVITY. Higher numbers cause the star to "pull" more on your ship, while low numbers have the opposite effect. The Options Menu also has a button that brings up a dialog box for you to enter your names for the score display.

Space Wars by Willliam Scott, Michael Coumatos, and William Birnes, Forge Books (April 17, 2007) describes how the first hours of World War III might play out in the year 2010. While fiction, it's based on real-world military scenarios and technologies, dramatically highlighting the West's vulnerability to destruction of its space-based commercial and military communications infrastructure.
