(NYSE: LUV) is an American low-fare airline based in Dallas, Texas, with its largest focus city at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport. It is the largest airline in the United States by number of passengers carried domestically per year and (as of December 31, 2007) ... the largest airline in the world by number of passengers carried.[1] It is also the 6th largest U.S. airline by revenue.[2] It also maintains the fourth-largest fleet of aircraft among all of the world's commercial airlines.
Southwest Airlines is the third largest carrier in the world and the largest in the United States for passengers carried domestically. Southwest Airlines has done something unmatched in the commercial airlines industry; that is theyĆ¢€™ve turned an annual profit every year since 1973. Southwest Airlines has used financial techniques, like hedging fuel, to bolster its profitability and counteract many of the fiscal disadvantages of operating an airline.
Southwest Airlines, the nation's largest airline in terms of domestic Customers boarded, currently serves 59 cities in 31 states. Based in Dallas, Southwest Airlines currently operates more than 2,900 flights a day. The carrier will begin service to Pittsburgh on May 4, 2005.

A Southwest plane lands in Las Vegas, Nevada. Southwest and US Airways are the dominant carriers at McCarran International Airport During 2006, Southwest Airlines began marketing ATA only flights. ATA's dependence on the Southwest network continued to grow in 2006, and today ATA offers over 70 flights a week to Hawaii from Southwest's hubs in PHX, LAS, LAX, and OAK. Additional connecting service is available to many other cities across the United States. Plans have been announced for ATA to offer exclusive international service for Southwest by 2010. Southwest today has taken over all ground operations for ATA at MDW, OAK, PHX, LAX, and LAS. These contracts provide that Southwest ramp personnel will now handle all ground operations (loading of aircraft, ground servicing, etc.) for ATA.
Southwest Airlines is well known for its low fare leadership. The legacy carriers serving Philadelphia have been charging up to a whopping $497 one-way for an unrestricted ticket to Providence (Boston Area), compared to Southwest’s meager $49 one-way unrestricted fare to Providence. Similarly, Southwest’s walk-up fare between Philadelphia and Chicago Midway is only $99 one-way.
"Southwest Airlines is happy to be able to grant this Christmas wish for these troops to reunite with their families," said Southwest Airlines President Colleen Barrett. "We are so proud of what these soldiers are doing for our country, and we are blessed to give back."
