The Southern Maryland region has been trying to attract a minor league baseball team for about three years. Originally, the town of Hughesville was targeted by the Atlantic League to be the home of the team, but the town's residents voted against the measure to retain the area's rural nature. [4]After Hughesville residents denied the ballpark, all focus was shifted to Waldorf.[5] The Atlantic League's formally announced an expansion team for the town of Waldorf on February 15, 2006, to begin play in the 2008 season.[6] The Blue Crabs were originally supposed to be an expansion team for the 2007 season, but the construction bids for Regency Furniture Stadium came in over budget. The team will now play in 2008.[7]

Southern Maryland has traditionally been a rural and agricultural region, but over the past few decades has experienced some suburban development as the Washington suburbs expand southward. This has primarily taken place around Waldorf (Charles County), Lexington Park (St. Mary's County), and Prince Frederick (Calvert County).

Southern Maryland, consisting of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties, has the highest annual growth rate (about 2.37 percent) in Maryland. The Maryland Office of Planning forecasts that by 2020 the region will have a projected population of 424,700, an increase of 168,950 over the 1995 estimate. Water demand in 2020 will increase by an estimated 20 million gallons per day or more based on a daily per capita usage of 100 gallons and anticipated increases in commercial, institutional, and military pumpage. Although some of this demand may be met from surface-water sources (for example, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Comission), the region will likely remain largely dependant on ground-water well into the future.

Southern Maryland is surrounded by water. The Chesapeake Bay, the Patuxent River, the Potomac River, and the St. Mary's River all bound the tri-county area. For this reason, the area is rich in lighthouse history, both active and inactive.
