Just as Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback is apologizing to fellow contender Mitt Romney for an aide’s e-mail attacking Mormonism, a Southern Baptist leader suggested Evangelicals would not vote for a Mormon. Leading a panel entitled “Mitt Romney: Should Evangelicals Vote for a Mormon President?” at a conference in Missouri, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary president R. Phillip Roberts – author of “Mormonism Unmasked” – suggested that voting for a Mormon could be an act “disloyal” to Jesus Christ:

Comment: And this is Southern Baptist scholarship! The head of the Department of New Testament would do well to read his New Testament instead of spending his time on the liberal views of the critics. See Paul's own testimony, Galatians 1:11 ff, "But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ." Paul was raised up to be a separate, independent witness to the Lord Jesus Christ, having seen the risen Christ face to face. This same Southern Baptist professor has written a book called, The Meaning and Message of Revelation. It was published by the Broadman Press of the Baptist Sunday School Board.

Attorney General Gonzales introduced the initiative to viewers of Pat Robertson's 700 Club television show and to the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville. A reporter for Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network accompanied Gonzales on his plane and interviewed him in flight.
