Grant Boosts Physical Education - The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona obtained a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools this summer to promote physical fitness in schools. The Farmers Insurance Young Americanos Photography Competition encouraged students from kindergarten through the 12th grade to photograph Latino Life in Southern Arizona. The photo contest was held in partnership with the Tucson Children's Museum, the Tucson Newspapers/Newspapers in Education program and the Tucson Hispanic Coalition. In addition to receiving valuable awards, the Tucson Children's Museum has ... agreed to feature the winning photographs in a special exhibition through August 20.

Nearly 150 years later, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino founded a string of Jesuit missions across the region the Spanish called the Pimeria Alta, an area that would later become northern Mexico and southern Arizona. Converting the Indians and building mission churches, Father Kino left a long-lasting mark on this region. Two of the missions he founded -- San Xavier del Bac, 9 miles south of present-day Tucson, and San José de Tumacacori, in Tubac -- still stand.
