The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut has been working with Community TechKnowledge (CTK) and their Online Data Manager (ODM) for the past three years, using it predominately with other agencies and their application process. Non-profit organizations apply to receive grants from United Way through the ODM, and is later sorted out by volunteers. The ODM ... aids in the allocations process, helps manage volunteers, and track outcomes of clients. Using the ODM also cuts down on the number of calls that they must take care of right away and allows the staff to attend to matters when they have time.
Southeastern Connecticut has historically been an area heavily dependent on traditional New England economic activities such as fishing, whaling, oystering, and the defense industry. In the present day, the area remains the primary home of the state's fishing and shellfish activity, but has since diversified its economic base to include tourism, gambling, and other services. Culturally, the area is heavily influenced by a mixture of its Yankee past and more recent immigrant groups, most notably Portuguese-Americans. The region can be said to be somewhat similar in this aspect to New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Black Roots in Southeastern Connecticut, 1650-1900, represents a milestone in the publishing of African-American genealogy. Authors Brown and Rose spent eight years gathering every shred of information they could find on approximately 2,000 African-American families who inhabited one or more of 26 counties in Southeastern Connecticut. Their sources consisted primarily of U.S. census records from 1790 through 1870 and secondarily on manumission records, deeds, probate records, diaries, church records, and military records. In particular, Brown and Rose have amassed an amazing amount of information on blacks who were living in an area that, on the eve of the Revolutionary War, had one of the largest slave populations in New England. The authors cite the specific source for each element appearing in their genealogical sketches. The brief introduction summarizes some of the challenges of investigating black roots, while the bibliography, name index, and subject index at the back of the volume make using the book quite easy.
The Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut is more than a place of play. The Museum’s education value is as significant, if not more significant, than its recreational value. It is a safe environment designed for children, which respects their personal developmental needs. Within this environment children cultivate relationships with adults and peers, often as the controllers of activity. Here, children set their own pace and are allowed to develop social skills as leaders – even with adults. This fosters motor and language skills while introducing children to the world around them.
The Southeastern Connecticut region is split into a large number of private and public providers of water, including supply departments owned by the cities of Norwich, New London and Groton and the town of East Lyme. Water, along with housing, represents the most challenging and critical issue for the continued prosperity of the region.
