South Central Alaska is the most populous region in the state for several reasons: excellent rainbow trout & salmon fishing, scenic hiking and the amenities of its cities. The Matanuska & Susitna River Valleys make up the agricultural center of the state, where sun-blessed area such as Palmer grow record-breaking vegetables, such as the famous 106-pound cabbage. Wasilla is home to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters, the fascinating Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry and the boating & fishing of nearby Big Lake and Willow. Talkeetna is a popular starting point for Mt. McKinley climbers. As you can see by the map above, South Central Alaska covers a very large area with very few roads. It is 400 miles from the Canadian border to Fairbanks and 528 miles to Anchorage. There are mountain ranges and rivers in abundance and the scenery is spectacular. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline begins at Prudhoe Bay and parallels the Richardson Highway (AK-4) from Fairbanks to Valdez.
