Flag of South Africa is two equal-width horizontal bands of red (top) and blue separated by a central green band which splits into a horizontal Y, the arms of which end at the corners of the hoist side; the Y embraces a black isosceles triangle from which the arms are separated by narrow yellow bands; the red and blue bands are separated from the green band and its arms by narrow white stripes. Following the 1994 elections, South Africa was governed under an interim constitution establishing a Government of National Unity (GNU). This constitution required the Constitutional Assembly (CA) to draft and approve a permanent constitution by May 9, 1996. After review by the Constitutional Court and intensive negotiations within the CA, the Constitutional Court certified a revised draft on December 2, 1996. President Mandela signed the new constitution into law on December 10, and it entered into force on February 3, 1997. The GNU ostensibly remained in effect until the 1999 national elections. The parties originally comprising the GNU--the ANC, the NP, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)--shared executive power.

When it comes to wildlife and scenery, South Africa has a plethora of places to see, including a number of World Heritage Sites and incredible game reserves. One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town is built amongst an entire, unique Cape Floral Kingdom, one of only six Plant Kingdoms that cover the Earth. There are more naturally occurring, different species of flowers just around Cape Town than there are in the whole of North America or the whole of Europe! In the Eastern Cape lies Mkambati, a small area of 3 000 hectares (6 000 acres) that contains more plants than Great Britain. On the other side of the spectrum are the deserts and arid areas, including the world's first National Park that traverses the borders of two countries, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
South Africa has a limited amount of arable land (about 12%) and inadequate irrigation; production is diminished during periodic droughts. The chief crops are corn, wheat, sugarcane, fruits, vegetables, sorghum, potatoes, peanuts, cotton, and tobacco. In addition, large numbers of dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats (including many Angora goats), and hogs are raised. There is a large fishing industry, and much fish meal is produced. Tourism ... contributes significantly to the economy.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, April 4 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Abbott today announced that it has filed for registration of the new tablet formulation of its HIV medicine, lopinavir/ritonavir, in South Africa. The Government of South Africa has granted fast track review of the new tablet formulation. This filing marks a key milestone in Abbott's ongoing efforts to expand availability of the new formulation for patients with HIV in developing countries. Abbott plans to maintain its current lopinavir/ritonavir price of $500 per patient, per year in Africa and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for the new formulation. By maintaining this price, lopinavir/ritonavir will continue to be one of the lowest-priced protease inhibitors (branded and generic) in Africa and the LDCs. Investing in Meeting the Needs of HIV Patients in Developing Countries Abbott has made a significant investment in advanced technologies to bring the new formulation to HIV patients, including expanding manufacturing capacity to meet the growing demand for second-line HIV treatment when first-line treatment has failed in developing countries, and developing the innovative and complex Meltrex technology for the new tablet formulation.

South Africa designated its first Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) in 2001. IDZs offer duty-free import of production-related materials and zero VAT on materials sourced from South Africa, along with the right to sell into South Africa upon payment of normal imported duties on finished goods. Expedited services and other logistical arrangements may be provided for small to medium-sized enterprises, or for new foreign direct investment. Co-funding for infrastructure development is available. There are no exemptions from other laws or regulations, such as environmental and labor laws. The Manufacturing Development Board licenses IDZ enterprises in collaboration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), which handles IDZ customs matters.
