South Africa failed to impress local supporters by not scoring a single goal in the African Nations Cup of 2006. In light of these poor performances it was decided that the hiring of a more experienced manager was essential. Rumours began to fly, prior to the 2006, that England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson was to be the man for the job, with SAFA apparently offering him R30 million to take Bafana-Bafana to glory in 2010. However this has since been denied. More recently the former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has accepted the job. After accepting the job, he was awarded R100 million for a four year contract.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- During extreme weather conditions experienced in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands near Howick on Monday 25 June 2007, several runaway veld fires occurred, causing extensive fire damage to Sappi Forests' property in the area. Extreme weather conditions made it very difficult to combat and then extinguish the fires. This was eventually achieved late on Tuesday, 26 June 2007.

In 2005 skepticism about the cause of AIDS was still thriving in South Africa. The Democratic Alliance gave a list of the country's twelve most influential "AIDS dissidents" (people who question the theory that HIV causes AIDS), whom it said had an "ongoing and bizarrely powerful" influence on national HIV/AIDS policy. The list was headed by attorney Anthony Brink, the convenor and national chairperson of the Treatment Information Group and spokesperson for the Dr Rath Health Foundation, an organisation dedicated to promoting the use of vitamin supplements rather than antiretrovirals to treat AIDS. Also featured were President Thabo Mbeki and Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

In 2006 DFID Southern Africa launched the Regional Plan for Southern Africa to work on growth and poverty with South Africa across borders in Southern Africa. The Regional Plan responds to the recommendations from the Commission for Africa and commitments made by G8 leaders in 2005 to give better and more aid towards Africa’s development.
