Soul Edge: Soul Calibur
built 138 days ago
Soul Calibur® II Once again the presence of Soul Edge drew a host of interesting and colorful warriors, some with deeper stories than most gameplay has ever allowed to be shown. There were characters who knew the swords to be evil, and others who believed it to be the savior of everything they held dear. There was ... Siegfried, who became possessed by Soul Edge and turned into the Evil Seed. Obviously, Namco still had big plans for the story, and the franchise. The interlocking biographies and story lines were of great interest then, and still are now, as Namco releases Soul Calibur IIto much cheering and clashing of virtual weapons.

Soul Calibur[W]as originally planned to be a dramatic overhaul, featuring only a few select characters to be carried over from its predecessor, Soul Edge. While the initial plan did not exactly follow through--as nine of the eleven characters from the original roster had carried over by the time the game was ported to the Sega Dreamcast --the game still did manage to nearly double the size of the roster from the previous title. Most of these characters were readily available from the second the player opens the package, such as:
Soul Edge (the game, not the sword) featured a unique fighting system for its time, but ultimately it was highly reminiscent of Namco-made sibling Tekken in terms of pacing and look. While some of the basic game structure transferred directly over from Soul Edge to Soul Calibur, the overall gameplay changed drastically. Soul Calibur added specific buttons dedicated to horizontal slashes, vertical slashes, kicks and guarding. This being a fighting game, the correct combination of these buttons (possibly with certain other commands) unleashes special moves, throws and other stuff.

Soul Calibur (a reference to Excalibur) is the weapon created to combat Soul Edge, which has become the standard moniker for games in the Soul series since its introduction. It was created by a king that once wielded Soul Edge and lost his son because of the demonic sword, and vowed to create a holy sword from the purified shards of Soul Edge that would oppose the demon sword, being its equal in strength and opposite in intent. Soul Calibur is commonly referred to as the "spirit sword" or "holy sword", and as such, restores the health of the user, along with numerous other beneficial effects, if a chosen weapon in the games.
