Soul Calibur

With flawless gameplay mechanics, characters packed with polygons, nearly endless replay value, and a soundtrack like no other, Soul Calibur is a game not to be missed. With a game like this, it baffles the mind as to why this console is now defunct. It's really impossible to ask much more from any game, especially when it was one of the first games for the console. If you own the console, you must own this game, no questions asked.

Given the games top notch presentation, tight and accessible gameplay with considerable depth and veritable endless buffet of modes and secrets to unlock, Soul Calibur 2 is a no-brainer purchase for fighting fans. [Import]

In addition to these exclusive characters, the Xbox version of Soul Calibur features Spawn. For those that don’t know, Spawn is a bas-ass comic book character created by Todd McFarlane of Image comics. Spawn is a reluctant servant of Satan (Malebolgia), having traded his soul for the life of his wife (Wanda). He is wrought with agony and attempts to free his soul from the grasp of Hell at every opportunity. The reason I’m telling you this is because there are several references to the Spawn storyline when you choose Spawn as your character. If you don’t know who Wanda and Malebolgia are, the lame-ass dialog will mean absolutely nothing to you.

As with the first Soul Calibur, the soundtrack to the sequel is simply prodigious in nature. Truly epic in its scope, the musical score is simply breathtaking, an audible delight. Every piece fits in perfectly, with not a single piece seeming out of place. Even the Re-creation of the Legend of Zelda theme is wonderful.

When the PS2 version of Soul Calibur 2 was launched, the majority of people waited in excitement to see just how far the 3D beat' um up genre could be pushed. Historically the high hopes and anticipation of each release was met with disappointment by most gamers. They continually received tarted up version of what they had before. Tekken had failed to add any thing but higher resolution polygons to its predecessor. Game after game, the 3D beat' um genre has failed to bring anything new to this generation. Would Soul Calibur 2 be up to the task?

That's not to say that the weapons-based combat that drives the heart of the gameplay in Soul Calibur III is not complex or wrought with intricacies. Being the third part in the series in addition to hundreds of similar types of versus fighting games, the multitude of rules and deep mechanics that govern the types of strikes, counters and damage in the game are finely tuned and well tested.
