Sony Psp: Games

Original: Sony is planning to release a new PSP bundle this summer, which includes the upcoming PSP-exclusive God of War: Chains of Olympus, according to an announcement made at retailer conference Destination PlayStation today. The package will include the game, a UMD version of Superbad, a certificate for a PSN download, and a brand new red PSP system. This would be Sony's third PSP bundle in the US, following the Daxter and Star Wars Battlefront sets. Just as the Star Wars PSP features a Vader rendering on its backside, the red PSP will sport Kratos, no doubt mean muggin. The bundle is expected to retail for $199 and should be available in June.

When Sony first announced an updated PSP at 2007's E3 show, a lot of people were straining to see what was so new about it. Indeed, from a distance, the new PSP is almost indistinguishable from its predecessor. But pick one up, and the differences are more apparent: it's thinner, much lighter, and sleeker than the original. It's ... got a few other new tricks under the hood. The new PSP (which Sony calls "the PSP 2000," to delineate from the earlier "PSP 1000" model) will be available in North America on September 10 in two different versions: a black PSP-only package ($170) and the Daxter Entertainment Pack version, a $200 package that includes a silver PSP with the Daxter game, a Family Guy UMD video, and a 1GB Memory Stick Duo. A similar Star Wars Entertainment Pack will follow a month later (white PSP with black Darth Vader monogram and the Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron game--but no MS Duo card included). Expect the bundle configurations to be updated periodically, along with the possibility of new colors at any time in the future.

In June of 2003 at the ELSPA Games Summit in London Sony announced the format that the PSP will use. The UMD (Univeral Media Disc) is a 2.4" 1.8Gb CD/Cartridge. The games for the PSP will run about $25-35 USD for the average ones and about $70-80 USD for the high end ones. Each UMD should have an individual watermark and other anti-piracy techniques to cut down on piracy of games. It seems that Activision, Capcom, and Square are already on the bandwagon to make games for the PSP. Development time for games is expected to be around 9 months.

The folks at Sony tout the PSP as, first and foremost, a gaming device. But in the next breath, they claim that it can do so much more, billing it as "the first truly integrated portable entertainment system." Both statements are, in fact, true, and suffice it to say that as a portable gaming device, particularly from a graphics standpoint, the PSP is unparalleled. You're getting a miniaturized PS2 gaming experience--or close to it, anyway--and Sony has amassed a decent selection of titles from various game developers to show off its handheld's gaming chops.
