Sonogram and ultrasound are two terms that are often used interchangeably. The term Sonogram refers to an ultrasound examination. Ultrasound all by itself refers to the technology used during a sonogram, but there are several other uses for ultrasound technology. When you are pregnant, and you are talking about ultrasounds, more often than not, you are talking about sonograms.

The sound and speech analysis java tool Sonogram runs under Mac OS X. No optional libraries are required for OS X, but the surfaceplot feature will not work, because Java3D is not available for Macintosh. The file is a compressed stuffit archive which includes the Sonogram.jar file. Installation is simple done by copying the Sonogram.jar file in the application folder on your hard disk. The paper "Digital Signal Analysis with Sonogram" gives an introduction into the techniques of the digital audio analysis and describes the full functionality of Sonogram. The paper is avaliable in the download section. Sonogram sucessfully tested only withMac OS X.

Sound distortions are so heavy on "Dramamine" the it almost has an electronic rain feel to it. Sonogram sinks into the deep cavities of your mind with a variety of musical sounds. Sonogram (Todd Gautreau) should be commended for realizing music that lasts only as long as its founding idea. Each of the 21 tracks on Substrates (66'55") are short, one to four minutes each and consist of an elemental idea which unfolds over the course of the composition. Instead of needlessly stretching the work out for several minutes, Gautreau chooses to present a two-minute idea in the space of two minutes. The content of this album ranges from pieces based on industrial drones and process music to amorphous ambient drift to the harmonized composition of melodious keyboard lines. It's an album of gentle, thoughtful songs. The music on Substrates encompasses the extent of this artist's early Ambient works.

Few groups have been as aptly named as Sonogram, whose pleasant, minimalist electronic music creates a virtual womb in which to curl up right inside one's speakers or headphones. Totally original stuff, a savvy, satisfying update of ambient music.
