Sonny Bono's widow isn't letting him rest in peace. Rep. Mary Bono tells TV Guide that the pop star-turned-congressman was a prescription drug abuser, and she believes that this led to his death in a skiing accident last January.

Bono, who divorced Cher in 1974, married Whitaker in 1986. He had one child with Cher - lesbian activist Chastity Bono - and two children with Whitaker. Bono had one child, Christy, with his first wife.

Bono's death came just days after Michael Kennedy died in a skiing accident. Bono's widow, Mary, was elected to fill the remainder of the Congressional term. Despite her two marriages since his death, she continues to champion many of Sonny's causes, including the ongoing fight to save the Salton Sea.

In the last weeks of the campaign, Mrs. Bono's effort was marked by family discord. Mr. Bono's mother, Jean, openly opposed her daughter-in-law's candidacy, contending that she should stay home with her two small children. Other extended family members then rose to Mary Bono's defense.
