This game marks the first appearance of Silver the Hedgehog, from Blaze's future, as well as the return of Blaze the cat from Sonic Rush. This is ... the first game that uses the same voice actors as the Anime Sonic X, different from those used in previous games.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Silver's frustration at Iblis's constant resurrections is used against him by Mephiles the Dark to ensure Iblis is released in the past. Mephiles informs Silver that in the past Sonic served as the "Iblis Trigger," and uses his powers to send Silver and Blaze back in time in order to kill Sonic before this can occur. In reality, Sonic's death would serve as the catalyst. Silver initially believes Mephiles's lies, but his encounters with Sonic and the others begin to make him question Mephiles's intentions.

This is probably the reason that many Sonic fans were anticipating the mach speed sections in Sonic The Hedgehog. Because, quite simply, Sonic moved very fast, and he moved equally fast while jumping. The earliest voice Sonic was given was that of teen actor Jaleel White (popularly known as Steve Urkel). In 1993, DiC Entertainment cast White as Sonic in their simultaneously released shows Sonic the Hedgehog and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. White would later be cast as Sonic for DiC's 1999 show Sonic Underground.

In the Sonic Underground TV series, Knuckles showed interest in Sonic's sister, Sonia the Hedgehog. Also, in the Sonic Anime, Sara is rumoured to be in love with Knuckles, as once he saves her from death, she says "Thank you Mr. Mole!" (a goof is that Knuckles is called a mole in the movie) and kisses him. Later, Tails asks Knuckles if he will stop a river of magma from destroying the arctic caps, but Knuckles hesitates. Sara says "Would you do it for me, brave boy?" and gives him a kiss.
