Sonic Rivals

Sonic Rivals is a head-to-head competition between Sonic and his top rivals, where the gloves are off and winner takes all! What starts as a friendly competition between Sonic and Knuckles quickly intensifies as Shadow and other rivals jump into the action. Sonic Rivals allows gamers to utilize boost moves and power-ups to trip, shove, and vault over each other while hurtling towards the finish line at breakneck speeds. Players will negotiate wildly twisting 3D tracks while avoiding the insidious Dr. Eggman and his myriad of hazardous traps and contraptions. The extensive rewards system, which is based on collecting trading cards, allows players to customize their favorite characters. Connect via wireless to race against a friend, and put trading cards on the line for even more multiplayer challenges.

Like any Sonic game, the plot in Sonic Rivals is background material at most. Basically Eggman is up to no good, again! Using a special camera he has somehow come across, he has been able to capture Amy and Tails into cards, and is making Sonic and Knuckles compete for them. Meanwhile, Shadow and Silver (the new character from the PS3/X360 game) have their own story going. Silver is chasing Eggman for some reason, and Shadow has come to his aid. That’s really about it – there are a few fairly predictable plot twists, but for the most part that’s it.

Building upon the success of Sonic Rivals, the sequel to Sonic’s fast and furious 3D action platformer, has several new features to enhance the player’s experience. A revamped rival “jostling” gameplay system allows for closer head-to-head competition, whilst rivalry is further improved with upgraded power-ups and range weapons allowing players to attack or defend themselves regardless of their position. A brand new Battle mode allows two players to jump into six different multiplayer challenges by sharing just one disc using the PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system’s Wi-Fi function.

The audio in Sonic Rivals doesn't have a whole lot to like, but it doesn't have much to hate, either. The basic sound effects like jumps, collisions, and rings are there, along with background music that is forgettable but still serves as a suitable accompaniment to the action.

The story in Sonic Rivals is pretty nonsensical. Sonic's enemy, Dr. Eggman, has developed a special camera that he can use to take pictures of people and turn them into trading cards. After Eggman turns both Tails and Amy into cards, it's up to Sonic to rescue his friends. But before you can defeat Eggman, you have to catch him by running through six different worlds and defeating the handful of bosses that he throws your way. Sonic isn't the only one after Eggman, though. Knuckles, Shadow, and Silver all want a piece of the mad scientist as well, so it becomes a race to see who can get to Eggman first.

From what has been seen of the game ... far, Sonic Rivals appears to play like the old 2 player mode from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The game features three dimensional graphics, but it all plays in 2D. Imagine something along the lines of the Sega Saturn classic Nights: Into Dreams or Capcom’s most recent entry in the Mega Man X series. The visuals are distinctly that of a Sonic game. Players will navigate classic Sonic style stages complete with loops, spikes, springs, and of course rings, all while avoiding the competition and making it to the finish line first. And all of this is shown in vibrant color.
