Sonic Heroes is all about teamwork. At all times the player is in control of a group of a three characters on the screen simultaneously. There are four teams, each comprised of three characters, to choose from at the start of the game. They are Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Chaotix, and Team Rose. Each team will traverse the same levels, but will have different objectives to complete. No matter what team you decide to play as, each of the three characters harbors one of three special powers.

Sonic Heroes is a team-based action game and the first in the Sonic series. It was released to 128 bit systems and to PC, but not the Sega Dreamcast. You can play as Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails or as other teams of characters. Each team has a speed, power, and flight character. For example, Sonic represents speed, Knuckles power, and Tails flight. It marked the debut of the boards that would be seen in Sonic Riders.

Sonic Heroes has the clever idea of rather then running around with one character why not have three. You have four teams to choose from all having different difficulties. Team Rose is the easiest of the four with shorter levels and less problems. Team Rose consists of Amy Rose, Big the Cat and Cream the Rabbit. Team Dark is where you control Shadow the Hedgehog, E-123 Omega and Rouge the Bat. Team Dark is the harder setting of them all.

Even though Sonic Heroes has its shortcomings; it is really fun to play. At times this game offers the classic Sonic feeling as you zip through some of these levels as fast as a speeding bullet.

Unlike all the previous Sonic games, Sonic Heroes revolves around team-based play, with each team having three players. There are four different teams to use in this game, Team Sonic, Rose, Dark, and Chaotix. The teams go through the same levels but there are different challenges that players will see. Also each of the teams ... represents the games difficulties. Team Rose is for beginning players, Team Sonic and Team Chaotix are for the intermediate players, and if gamers want a true challenge they need to go with Team Dark.

Sonic Heroes marks the first significant change in Sega's long-running franchise since 1999's Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast. Like the Sonic Adventure series, the levels are depicted in 3D from a perspective behind the character. Unlike Sonic Adventure and previous Sonic games... players control a three-character team throughout the colorful worlds. A total of four teams are available, all consisting of members from previous Sonic the Hedgehog games, ranging from the 1991 original to 2003's Sonic Advance 2 on Game Boy Advance.
