Song of the South: Walt Disney
built 634 days ago
That's a total of 90.1% of people who would buy or rent Song of the South, and a total of 96.2% who feel that this movie should be released. Any way you look at it, the results are overwhelmingly in favor of this movie being released. (Hint hint, Disney, are you reading this?) The poll results have been archived. Thanks to SaveDisney.com for creating the poll! And thanks to Merlin J. for the updates.
With the hope of avoiding that, BVHE reportedly plans to really pile on the extra features with "Song of the South." Among the ideas currently being knocked around is producing a special documentary that -- through use of clips from that TV movie version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella" that Disney produced back in 1997 as well as sequences from "The Proud Family" & "That's So Raven" -- would demonstrate that a person's color really doesn't matter at the modern Walt Disney Company. There's ... talk of including Walt Disney Feature Animation's seldom-seen short, "John Henry," as one of the disc's special features.

Time magazine: "Artistically, Song of the South could have used a much heavier helping of cartooning. Technically, the blending of two movie mediums is pure Disney wizardry. Ideologically, the picture is certain to land its maker in hot water."

Despite these achievements for Black Americans, Song of the South has been unfairly labeled as racist and hidden from view in the United States by the Walt Disney Company. Despite the fact that Splash Mountain, based on the Brer Rabbit characters ("Brer" is short for "Brother"), is one of the most popular rides at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, and despite the fact that the songs are still some of the best loved in the Disney canon, the film remains unavailable on VHS or DVD in the US (though it has largely been available in Britain and Asia).
Walt Disney's 1946 "Song of the South" on Pioneer #PILF-1096 Japanese LaserDisc, NTSC, CLV, 94 mn, reissue with digital audio. All Japanese LDs play on all North American LD decks, this one is no exception. Disc is bilingual, English on the right, Japanese on the left audio channel: no subtitle on screen, except during songs, select which language you want to hear with your LD player's audio functions. Never released on disc in the USA, will probably not be seen on DVD: grab a copy of the import LD while you can ! Read more about uncensored Japanese Disney LDs here.

Disney's "Song of the South" has earned criticism for portraying black servants on a Georgia plantation as being happy with their inferior role. The movie was rereleased six times, but due to its content, it was taken off the market and has never been released on DVD or videotape in this country, Johnson said.
