The Burao countryside en route to Berbera Since the Eritrean-Ethiopian War, Somaliland has grown as a major export port for Ethiopia. The two countries signed a deal that the port city of Berbera will export and import goods for Ethiopia, while the latter will pay for it.
You need a Somaliland visa to enter - do note that Somali visas are not accepted. Most travellers get a visa in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Contact the Somaliland liaison office in Addis Ababa, phone +251 11 635921. To get to the office you should find the Awraris Hotel, and follow the dirt road that runs down the side of the hotel for 200 metres, then turn right and continue another 200 metres. The office does not have any big signs, look for guards. A Somaliland visa is ... allegedly available from the Somaliland representation in Djibouti.

There are more than eighty minefields in Somaliland, sixty-three of which have been confirmed by SMAC. The majority of minefields are found near the Ethiopian border. Somaliland is a pastoral society and the frontier area is the most important grazing area for Somaliland livestock. Each season, tens of thousands of nomads and their herds cross the border on foot in search of water and pasture and are therefore at risk from the mines. No systematic demining has taken place in this frontier area and there are no paved roads in the area, nor are there any hospitals or health care centers.

The third topographical zone is the Hawd, which stretches across the border from Somaliland into Ethiopia. Although rich in pasture, the Hawd has virtually no permanent water sources. Historically, nomadic pastoralists grazed their herds in the Hawd during the rains, but were forced to migrate to more hospitable areas during the harsh dry season (Jiilaal) when water sources dried up. In the past half century... since the introduction of berkado (cemented underground water reservoirs), the Hawd has come to support permanent settlements. This has led to a steady process of desertification, decimating the rich pastures that once made the zone ideal for rearing livestock.
